I just read this article and it was what I needed to hear. I'm an unemployed architect (laid off in 2008 too) and still struggling to find where to go next. Glad you've found success and peace working for yourself. Keep up the good work.

What a great success story! I'm always glad when a fellow architect does well. Thanks for showing us how to design a way out of this recession.

Way to go!!! I was laid off nov 2008 as well. Been an architectural rep for pella for two years now...new skills, p.o.v. Etc (vs. Etsy). Here's my story....http://www.architectmagazine.com/architects/available-immediately.aspx ....odd being a story for losing a job. Typing this on my generic sleeved iPad.

Hello Larry & Kai:

Thanks for you notes. Sorry to hear you were also in the same boat. It was difficult time for so many of us. I wrote about my experience here if you'd like to read: http://byrdandbelle.typepad.com/byrd_belle/2010/01/from-a-reader.html

I've been asked often if I miss architecture and I do. I love designing space and studying architectural theory. I'd like to think that I've taken my favorite parts of my education and my career and twisted it into something new. It is undeniable that it influences a broad spectrum of my business from my design sensibility to way I write my descriptions. I don't regret choosing Architecture, it was a wonderfully broad and intense field of study.

I hope that all the creative people that have had a hard time finding and maintaining good employment over the past few years can find a way to connect to that part of the brain/being that drew them to creative professions in the first place.

My best to you both,
Angie Davis
